General Information
Alanya is a perfect holiday destination with its wide beaches, historical monuments, modern hotels and motels, many fish restaurants, cafes, and bars. The first thing that catches visitors’ attention is the Seljuk Castle, built in the 1200s at the top of the Alanya Peninsula. In addition to the impressive castle, the grandeur of the Red Tower with its unique octagonal shape is also worth seeing. The cafes and bars around the harbor are the places to visit in the evening hours. In the shops along the harbor road, local handicrafts, leather, clothing, jewelry, bags, and pumpkins are sold, decorated with interesting local colors. If you enjoy exploring caves, the Damlatas Cave is a must-see. The cave is located close to the Ethnography Museum. Three sea caves are accessible by boat: the Phosphor Cave, filled with phosphorescent stones, the Girls Cave where female pirates were imprisoned, and the Lovers Cave. 15 km east of Alanya, the cool shade of Dim River Valley is an ideal place for relaxation. The sea surrounding Alanya offers a paradise filled with sun, sea, and sand.
CLIMATE OF THE REGION
Alanya has all the characteristics of a Mediterranean climate. It is classified as a hot sea climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and rainy. During the summer months, temperatures can range from 28°C to 36°C. The hottest time of day, around 13:00-14:00, can see temperatures rise to 40°C. However, the perceived temperature and humidity may be much higher. The annual average relative humidity is about 64%. The sea temperature is ideal for most people; it offers nine months of swimming and holiday opportunities. In winter, the temperature remains above zero. The average temperature in January ranges from 10°C to 20°C. Snowfall and frost are very rare in areas near the sea. Heavy rainfall and storms occur during the winter season, with intense rain causing annual damage to agricultural fields. On rainy days, the temperature is usually above 10°C.
Alanya enjoys nearly 300 days of sunshine annually. Most of the rainfall occurs in the winter months. The annual rainfall and temperature data for Alanya are provided below.
Red Tower
Located at the harbor, the octagonal Red Tower is a symbol of the city. It is a Seljuk structure dating back to the 1200s. It was built in 1226 by master builder Ebu Ali Rehç el Kettani, who came from Aleppo and had previously built the Sinop Castle. The Red Tower is made of red bricks, with the upper parts baked in fire due to the difficulty of lifting the stone blocks to a certain height. This tower is called "Kızıkule" (Red Tower). Marble blocks from ancient times can be seen in the castle's walls. The tower is octagonal in shape, 33 meters tall, and 29 meters in diameter. Each wall is 12.5 meters long. There are five floors, including the ground floor. Visitors can access the tower by climbing 85 steps on a steep and distant stone staircase. Sunlight reaches up to the first floor. The tower also has a cistern. It was constructed to protect the harbor and quay from sea attacks and was used for military purposes for centuries. It was restored in the 1950s, opened to visitors in 1979, and the first floor was converted into an ethnography museum.
Alanya Castle
The Alanya Castle is situated on a peninsula, rising to a height of 250 meters above sea level, with walls that extend for approximately 6.5 kilometers. Although settlement on the Alanya Peninsula dates back to the Hellenistic period, the cultural features we see today belong to the Seljuk period of the 1200s. The castle was constructed in 1221 by order of Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. The castle has 83 towers and 140 bastions. Additionally, there are approximately 400 cisterns built during the medieval period to supply water, some of which are still in use today. The walls of the castle were very carefully planned and include parts such as Ehmedek, İçkale, Adama Atacağı, Cilvardabükü's upper section, Arab Evliyası Burcu, Esat Burcu, Puslat Evi, and the quay, continuing as far as Kızılkule-İçkale, where an open-air museum is located. Alaaddin Keykubat's palace was also built in this castle.
Today, the castle is still inhabited. Historical wooden and brick houses line the streets, with silk and cotton being woven, white calebasses painted with different figures, and real meals served in small gardens. Furthermore, there are restaurants and cafes with harbor views on the way to the castle and its surroundings. The castle is accessible by traffic, and walking to the top takes about an hour.
Shipyard
In 1227, six years after Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat’s conquest of the city, construction of the Alanya Shipyard began near the Red Tower, and it was completed a year later. The dock on the sea side of the harbor has five cells and arches, measuring 56.5 meters in length and 44 meters in depth. The location selected for the dock receives the most sunlight. The inscription above the dock gate displays the coat of arms of Sultan Keykubat and is adorned with various symbols. The Alanya Shipyard was the first shipyard of the Seljuks in the Mediterranean. Alaaddin Keykubat had previously ordered the construction of the Sinop shipyard, and with the opening of the Alanya Shipyard, he earned the title "Sultan of Two Seas." There is a small mosque on one side of the dock and a watchman's booth on the other. One of the cells contains a well that has dried over time. The dock can be accessed by boats or by walking from the castle's nearby walls, and there is no fee for entering.
